![]() ![]() Prolonged suspense: The tension around the act of sneaking around a precarious location is spread, as it would be, across the whole endeavor, rather being concentrated at the point of a single dice roll (after which everyone can relax at least somewhat if it goes well). If the tower falls for any reason, stealth is broken and the appropriate consequences ensue. ![]() (For a larger party all stealthing together, you might want to pick more forgiving numbers or just have a single pull for the group.) You can, of course, add penalty pulls at your discretion for actions that seem much riskier in terms of drawing attention. Extreme success, one block every other action. You can tweak the exact numbers as you please, but for a single Investigator having to explore a cargo ship at night (with crew asleep onboard), I decided that on a fail, they'd have to pull three blocks whenever they travelled a significant distance or took an action that risked making noise or drawing attention. Players make a single stealth roll at the outset, which does not in itself determine how successfully they stealth, but how frequently and in what quantity they need to pull Jenga blocks from the tower and replace them on top, as per standard Jenga rules. The idea is pretty straightforward: Whenever stealth is needed for an extended period of time (like sneaking around and exploring a building, as opposed to a single stealthy action) the Jenga tower comes out. So well I expect I'll make it the standard way I do prolonged stealth missions for in-person sessions, and I'd highly recommend others give it a shot. I finally had a rare in-person game with a group I usually run online, and was at last able to actually try it, and I'm pleased to say it worked out very well. So ages ago I wrote a post floating the idea of stealing the Dread RPG's system of using Jenga blocks as a way of doing stealth checks in Call of Cthulhu.
